The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved inviting investment proposals for the long-term lease and development of the historic Bogambara prison site in Kandy.
Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the project aims to lease the property on a 50-year basis, opening the site for Expansions of Interest (EoIs) from potential investors interested in transforming the space under a development initiative supported by private financing.
The Bogambara Prison premises, which was handed over to the Urban Development Authority (UDA), is located within the utility service zone of the Kandy Municipal Council Area as outlined in the 2021-2030 development plan.
Recognised for its historical and architectural significance, the old Bogambara Prison complex was listed under the World Heritage Building Conservation.
Given its cultural value and central location of the premises, the Bogambara prison complex positions it as a prime use for cultural and tourism promotional activities.
The proposal to this effect presented by Urban Development, Construction and Housing Minister Aruna Karunathilake was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
