The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved constructing a new residential facility at the narcotic drug treatment centre in Handessa, Peradeniya.
The expansion, estimated at Rs. 110 million, will be funded under the Clean Sri Lanka program and aims to address the growing demand for rehabilitation services for children and young people under 21 years of age.
Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa on Tuesday said the existing treatment centre, operated by the Narcotic Control National Board, currently provides services through both residential and non-residential models. However, it has a limited capacity of only 35 residents, resulting in a waiting list for admissions.
Therefore, he said the proposed new residential building will significantly increase the centre’s capacity, allowing more affected youth to access timely intervention and care.
It has been recognised that treatment services and sufficient space allocated is essential for related individuals in that age category when treating them considering the psycho-social conduct of those in that age category related to drug use.
The proposal to this effect submitted by Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
