The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the allocation of Rs. 150 million under the Clean Sri Lanka Program to implement 26 public sanitation projects across 24 Local Government (LG) areas in 2026, as part of efforts to improve facilities for both the public and tourists.

The move aims to proceed with the new projects, continuing the Government’s efforts to improve public health, urban cleanliness and tourism-related infrastructure under the Clean Sri Lanka Program. The initiative follows a Cabinet decision taken on 6 January 2025, to enhance sanitation infrastructure in urban areas. Under that program, the Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry implemented 29 projects during 2025 with funding of Rs. 327 million. According to the Government, construction work on 16 of the 29 projects has already been completed, while the remaining projects are currently under construction and are expected to be finished within the next month.

Following an evaluation of project proposals submitted by LG institutions countrywide, authorities identified 26 priority projects for implementation this year.

“The projects are aimed at strengthening sanitation facilities in urban centres frequented by residents and visitors,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

The proposal to this effect was submitted by the Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister.
