The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved digitising the operational activities of the Right to Information (RTI) Commission, aimed at improving efficiency in handling appeals and other official processes.
The RTI Commission, established under the RTI Act, No. 12 of 2016, is responsible for examining and deciding on appeals submitted under the Act. At present, much of the Commission’s work, including the review and documentation of appeals, is carried out manually due to limited technological facilities.
To address this constraint, the Commission plans to implement a digitalisation project to modernise its operational processes.
“Under the initiative, the Open Society Foundation has agreed to provide a grant of $ 200,000, following recommendations by the World Bank, to support the program,” Cabinet Spokesman and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday.
He said the funding will be used to purchase required equipment, develop software systems, obtain specialised technical expertise, and build the capacity of existing staff to manage the digital platform.
The proposal to this effect was submitted by Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Jayatissa.
