The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved the appointment of a fresh committee to oversee the implementation of recommendations made by previous probes into the Easter Sunday attacks.

Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the move comes amid concerns over the absence of a structured and sustained mechanism to monitor progress on recommendations issued by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry and the then Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security.

Although Cabinet approval had been granted in May 2021 to implement these recommendations and introduce preventive measures, he said there has been no effective system in place to evaluate or ensure their execution.

Dr. Jayatissa said the newly approved mechanism will operate under the supervision of the Presidential Secretariat and include experts in counter-terrorism and national security, along with representatives from relevant ministries and institutions.

He said the committee will focus on systematically tracking implementation progress.

“The committee will monitor the implementation of the recommendations of the Easter attacks report,” he said, noting that previously there had been no proper mechanism to carry forward the recommendations.

He said the decision is expected to strengthen accountability and ensure follow-through on key national security reforms proposed in the aftermath of the 2019 attacks.
