Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa recently said the Government expects to conduct the long-delayed Provincial Council elections at the earliest possible opportunity.
Speaking at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, he rejected suggestions that the Government does not intend to hold the elections, following a recent statement by MP Nilanthi Kottahachchi that the polls would not be conducted.
Dr. Jayatissa said the Government has already allocated funds for the Provincial Council elections, but stressed that the necessary legal framework must first be established.
He explained that if Parliament passes the required legislation and completes the delimitation process within this year, the elections could be held thereafter.
“The expectation of the Government is to hold the Provincial Council elections soon. There is no idea that the elections will not be held. A committee has already been appointed in Parliament, and the work must proceed through it,” he said.
However, Dr. Jayatissa asserted that elections cannot be conducted without the necessary legal provisions, making it essential for Parliament to enact the required legislation without further delay.
The Provincial Council electoral process has remained stalled amid unresolved issues relating to the electoral system and the delimitation of electoral boundaries.
