The country’s COVID-19 death toll yesterday exceeded 3,000 with the Director General of Health Services confirming 45 more COVID-19 deaths the previous day.

The 45 deaths include one from the below 30 age category, 12 from the 30 to 59 age category, and 32 from the over 60 age category.

The Department of Government Information states that 24 persons were female and 21 persons were male.

The country recorded its first COVID-19 death in March 2020, and, by the end of the year, Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 fatalities had risen to 199. On 14 April, the country’s COVID-19 death toll was 602.

However, since the emergence of the New Year cluster and the third wave of the pandemic, Sri Lanka has seen close to 2,500 COVID-19 deaths. Of this, 1,546 were reported in June.

At present, the country has recorded 3,030 COVID-19 deaths.

Meanwhile, Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control State Minister Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle said 12 pregnant women have died of COVID-19 thus far.
