The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has commenced an inquiry into the shooting death of alleged underworld figure Makandure Madush while he was in the custody of the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) in 2020.

Police said the CID will record statements from the officers who escorted Madush to the Maligawatta area on the day he was killed.

Madush was shot dead on 20 October 2020 in Maligawatta by two unidentified gunmen. At the time of the incident, CCD officers had taken him to the area to recover a consignment of narcotics based on information he had reportedly provided.

Following the killing, a brother of Madush requested the Public Security Ministry Secretary to initiate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The matter was subsequently referred to the CID by the Inspector General of Police.

Police said that after the case was presented before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, the Court directed that a statement be obtained from the relevant medical officer and that video footage of the incident be collected from media organisations as part of the investigation.
