The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) yesterday said maintenance and repair work is in progress on two generating units at the Lakvijaya (Norochcholai) Coal Power Plant, outlining expected timelines for their return to service.

According to the CEB, Generator No. 2 was taken offline on 3 November 2025 for planned ‘B’ level maintenance, which is carried out once every three years with the involvement of both local and foreign technical teams. The overhaul is now nearing completion, with the unit scheduled to be reconnected to the national grid around 14 January 2026, following the completion of inspections.

Separately, Generator No. 1 was shut down on 20 December after an unexpected boiler malfunction. The CEB said urgent repair work is underway and the unit is expected to be restored and synchronised with the grid by around 18 January 2026.

The CEB assured consumers that the ongoing maintenance and repair activities will not affect the uninterrupted supply of electricity.
