President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has re-nominated a candidate for AG
The Constitutional Council (CC) is to meet early this week to consider the re-submission of Senior Deputy Auditor General L.S.I. Jayarathne for appointment as Auditor General (AG).
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has re-nominated Jayarathne after her name was earlier rejected by the Council.
According to sources, the CC is scheduled to meet tomorrow (3) at 2 p.m. to reconsider the President’s nomination for the post of AG.
However, the re-submission follows the withdrawal of the nomination of Open University Bursar W.M.K.P.A. Wickremesinghe, whose name had been proposed previously.
Although the newly appointed CC members – Austin Fernando, Prof. Wasantha Seneviratne, and Ranjith Ariyaratna – met on Friday, they have not taken a decision on the appointment, which has been vacant for nearly nine months since the retirement of Chulantha Wickramaratne.
Senior officer Dharmapala Gammanpila was appointed as Acting AG but was not nominated for the permanent post. Earlier, three names were proposed but the CC has not approved those names for the post of AG.
Meanwhile, the Mahanayaka Theras last week requested the Government to consider Gammanpila for the post considering his seniority in the service.
