The All Ceylon Bakery Owners Association (ACBOA) yesterday said the price of bread and all bakery snacks will increase by Rs. 10 across the board from today (24), citing higher fuel and raw material costs.

Speaking at a press conference at the association’s headquarters in Raddolugama, ACBOA President N.K. Jayawardena said the price increase was a unanimous decision by the Executive Council.

He said a standard 450g loaf, previously priced at Rs. 120, would now retail at Rs. 130. Other bakery items would also see a Rs. 10 increase over current prices.

He said the association had historically avoided revising prices except when flour costs rose, but the present environment left little room for absorption. “Not only fuel prices, but also the cost of raw materials used in our products has increased significantly,” he said.

The latest adjustment follows a broader rise in energy costs, which has fed through to transport and production expenses across sectors. Jayawardena revealed that around 30% of bakeries countrywide rely on diesel-powered ovens for production, leaving them particularly exposed to fuel price volatility.

Jayawardena said the combination of higher fuel, flour and ancillary input costs has eroded margins, making a price revision unavoidable.
