BASL urges prompt appointment of RTI Commission Chairperson

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) recently called on the Constitutional Council to take immediate action to fill the vacant position of the Right to Information (RTI) Commission Chairperson, highlighting the growing concern over the Commission’s ability to function effectively in the absence of its Chief.

In a formal communication dated 28 May, addressed to the Chairperson and Members of the Constitutional Council, the BASL has notified the resignation of retired Supreme Court Judge Upali Abeyratne from his post on or about 9 March 2025, and since then, no appointment has been made to fill this vital position.

The BASL noted that the office of the Chairperson is integral to the effective functioning of the Commission and the fulfilment of its mandate under the Right to Information Act, No. 12 of 2016.

“The absence of a Chairperson hampers the Commission’s ability to operate efficiently and discharge its duties as provided by the RTI Commission. In light of the above, we urge the Constitutional Council to take swift action to recommend a suitable individual as the Chairperson of the RTI Commission to the President of the Republic,” the BASL statement noted.

It added that an appointment to the said post will reinforce the importance of the Commission and ensure the continued protection of the right to information for all citizens.

“We trust that this matter will receive your utmost consideration and prompt action,” it read.
