Former State Minister Prasanna Ranaweera

The Court of Appeal yesterday dismissed, without a hearing, the petition filed by former State Minister Prasanna Ranaweera, seeking an order to prevent his arrest in connection with an illegal property sale case.

A bench comprising the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mohammed Laffar Tahir and Justice Priyantha Fernando dismissed the petition when it was taken up for hearing yesterday.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is seeking to arrest Ranaweera over allegedly selling a plot of State-owned land in Kiribathgoda to a private party by forging documents.

The Court has already issued warrants to seize the properties of Ranaweera and another suspect, both evading arrest.

Former Minister Mervyn Silva and three others remain in remand custody, as ordered by the Mahara Magistrates Court in connection with the same incident.
