Agrarian Insurance Board to compensate drought-hit farmers within two weeks

The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board is set to compensate farmers whose lands have been adversely affected by the ongoing dry spell, with payouts expected within two weeks, Board Director General I.U.K. Kaluarachchi said yesterday.

Addressing the media, he said around 8,000 acres to 8,500 acres of agrarian land across six to seven districts have been adversely impacted by the prevailing drought conditions.

He said the Board is prepared to process compensation for the affected lands promptly, with payments to be made within a fortnight.

Regarding concerns over funding, Kaluarachchi said Rs. 3,000 million had been allocated for this purpose in the Budget, adding that the sum was sufficient to meet compensation needs arising from the current dry spell.
