Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya on Saturday stated that criminal activities in the Western and Southern Provinces have increased, but security has been reinforced to tackle the situation.
Speaking at a special press briefing at the Government Information Department, Weerasooriya noted that law enforcement measures have been intensified, particularly around Court complexes and high-risk areas.
He clarified that while Police officers are deployed outside Courts, internal security remains the responsibility of a private security firm – a matter that is now under review.
The Acting IGP raised concerns over criminal networks operating from foreign countries, stating that such gangs no longer enjoy political protection.
He highlighted that in the past, criminals operated with political backing, but authorities have now taken a firm stance against such activities.
He further revealed that criminal activity is also being orchestrated from within prisons, prompting an intensification of security operations within penitentiary facilities. Weerasooriya also disclosed that some criminals are attempting to flee the country via both air and sea routes. In response, the Sri Lanka Navy and Coast Guard have ramped up operations to curb illegal departures and apprehend fugitives.
