AG appoints four-member committee to review Batalanda Commission report

Attorney General (AG) Parinda Ranasinghe has appointed a four-member committee to study the Batalanda Commission report and assess the possibility of legal action based on its findings.

The committee is chaired by Senior Additional Solicitor General Rohantha Abeysuriya.

Its other members include Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, Senior President’s Counsel Jayani Wegodapola, and President’s Counsel Shakthi Jagodaarachchi.

The committee has been tasked with examining whether indictments can be filed based on the evidence contained in the report.

Additionally, it is responsible for identifying any errors that may be time-barred and determining whether further investigation is required.

The Attorney General’s Department confirmed that the Batalanda Commission report was recently forwarded to the AG by the Presidential Secretariat, following instructions from the President. According to the President’s Media Division, the Government has decided to pursue further action based on the report’s findings.

Public interest in the Batalanda Commission, which investigated human rights violations and political violence during the 1988-1990 period, was reignited following remarks made by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe during an interview on Al Jazeera’s Head to Head program aired on 6 March.
