AAT orders retrospective DIG promotion for Shani Abeysekara

The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) has directed the National Police Commission (NPC) to promote Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shani Abeysekara to the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) with retrospective effect from 25 August 2020.

The ruling was delivered yesterday following the conclusion of an appeal filed by Abeysekara several years ago, bringing to a close a long-standing administrative dispute over his promotion within the police service.

Under the order, the Commission has been instructed to formally recognise the promotion with effect from the specified date, effectively adjusting his service record and seniority accordingly.

Abeysekara, who joined the Sri Lanka Police as a Sub-Inspector on 10 February 1986, has served across multiple ranks during his career, including Inspector, Chief Inspector, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Superintendent of Police (SP), and SSP.
