744 persons test positive for COVID-19

  • Total patient count rises to 564,733

  • New Year cluster expands to 459,150 patients

Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 detections rose to 564,733 with 744 persons testing positive for COVID-19 yesterday.

The patients detected yesterday include 559 persons from the New Year cluster and the Health Promotion Bureau states that 8,815 PCR tests were conducted.

The previous day, 719 persons from the New Year cluster and three Sri Lankan overseas returnees tested positive for COVID-19. The Health Promotion Bureau states that 6,615 PCR tests and 3,100 rapid antigen tests were conducted on Tuesday.

In total, 459,150 persons from the New Year cluster, 82,785 persons from the Peliyagoda cluster, 9,054 persons from the Prisons cluster, and 3,059 persons from the Divulapitiya cluster have tested positive for COVID-19.

The country’s imported cases include 6,980 Sri Lankans and 328 foreigners.

The district distribution of COVID-19 patients shows 115,108 persons from Colombo, 98,341 persons from Gampaha, 52,991 persons from Kalutara, 35,480 persons from Galle, and 27,412 persons from Kurunegala.

During the third wave of the pandemic there have been 82,811 persons from Colombo, 79,807 persons from Gampaha, and 45,933 persons from Kalutara.

At present, 9,578 persons are under medical or home-based care and 2,721 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are under observation.

The Epidemiology Unit states that 396 persons were released from care yesterday, raising the country’s COVID-19 recoveries to 540,783.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath yesterday said: “No one can say the variant has definitely not arrived in Sri Lanka given the spread in various countries.”

He added that it was more important to prevent COVID-19 spread in general.
