22 new COVID-19 cases identified

  • Total confirmed cases rise to 1,857

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country rose to 1,857, with 22 new cases identified yesterday.

Of the confirmed cases, 892 are Navy personnel and their close contacts, 627 are Sri Lankan returnees from abroad, and 313 are other local cases.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, there are currently 856 patients under medical care at various COVID-19 treatment centres. This includes 137 at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), 123 at the Welisara Navy Hospital, 107 at the Hambantota District General Hospital, and 95 at the Teldeniya Base Hospital.

The Epidemiology Unit also stated that 49 persons recovered during the 24-hour period ending at 10 a.m. yesterday. Of these patients, 16 were discharged from the Iranawila Hospital, 14 from the Homagama Base Hospital, 11 from the NIID, six from the Colombo East Base Hospital, and one each from the Kattankudy Base Hospital and the Hambantota District General Hospital.

The total recoveries in the country has risen to 990, and the Health Promotion Bureau states that Sri Lanka’s recovery rate is 53.31%. Military spokesman Brig. Chandana Wickremasinghe stated that yesterday’s recoveries include 34 Navy personnel, which brings the total recoveries among Navy personnel to 522. Over 300 Navy personnel continue to receive treatment for COVID-19.

In addition to this, 41 suspect patients are under investigation at several hospitals. The Health Promotion Bureau stated that 76,957 PCR tests have been carried out so far, including 1,718 on Sunday.

Brig. Wickremasinghe added that 173 persons left the Vaikkal, Rantabe, Pitipana, and Nipuna Boossa Quarantine Centres yesterday after the completion of the quarantine process and a PCR test.

“So far, 12,408 persons have left the quarantine centres managed by the Tri-Forces and a further 5,109 persons remain at the 43 centres,” he added.
