2,922 persons test positive for COVID-19

A total of 2,922 persons tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, raising the country’s COVID-19 detections to 339,092.

According to Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control State Minister Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle, a 30% increase in the number of patients and a 48.8% increase in the number of COVID-19 fatalities was seen last week compared to the week before.

The patients detected yesterday include 2,904 patients from the New Year cluster, which had a total patient count of 233,748 at 10 a.m. yesterday. The Peliaygoda cluster had 82,785 patients, the Prisons cluster had 7,932 patients, and the Divulapitiya cluster had 3,059 patients. The cumulative patient count of the four clusters is 327,220.

In terms of imported cases, 6,404 Sri Lankan overseas arrivals and 328 foreigners have also tested positive for COVID-19.

This includes the 2,953 patients detected on Monday, of which 2,938 were from the New Year cluster and 15 were Sri Lankan overseas arrivals.

The Health Promotion Bureau states that 18,536 PCR tests and 4,990 rapid antigen tests were carried out on Monday. A total of 15,242 PCR tests were carried out yesterday.

On Monday, 767 persons from Gampaha, 440 persons from Kalutara, and 312 persons from Colombo tested positive for COVID-19.

During the third wave of the pandemic, 45,445 persons from Colombo, 41,878 persons from Gampaha, and 29,332 persons from Kalutara tested positive for COVID-19.

The country’s total COVID-19 detections include 77,742 persons from Colombo, 60,412 persons from Gampaha, 36,390 persons from Kalutara, 16,189 persons from Kurunegala, and 15,919 persons from Galle.

At present, 35,708 persons are under medical or home-based care and hospitals are observing 3,315 persons suspected of having COVID-19.

The Epidemiology Unit states that 298,162 persons have recovered from COVID-19 to date, with 2,644 persons leaving treatment centres yesterday.
