155 COVID-19 fatalities raise death toll to 5,775

Daily COVID-19 fatalities exceeded 150 for the second consecutive day with 155 COVID-19 fatalities confirmed on Thursday. This raises the country’s COVID-19 death toll to 5,775, of which 3,351 are male and 2,424 are female. 

Eighty-five fatalities confirmed on Thursday were male and 70 were female. The COVID-19 deaths confirmed on Thursday consist of 111 persons over the age of 60, 41 persons between ages 30 and 59, and three persons below the age of 30.

The majority of the country’s COVID-19 fatalities are above the age of 60. The Epidemiology Unit states that 75.44% of the fatalities are over the age of 60, 23.45% are between ages 30 and 59, and 1.1% are below the age of 30.

Meanwhile, Health Ministry Spokesperson Dr. Hemantha Herath urged all persons, especially those over the age of 60, to get vaccinated.

“Looking at the vaccination rates among the fatalities, it is only a small percentage that has received both doses. Even among this group are persons who are elderly or have other health conditions,” he said.
