1,941 persons test positive for COVID-19, less than 2,000 daily detections for first time since 8 May

The country’s daily COVID-19 detections dropped below 2,000 for the first time since 8 May, with health authorities stating that 1,941 persons tested positive for the virus yesterday.

On 8 May, 1,896 persons tested positive for the virus and daily detections have remained between 2,000 and 3,700 since then.

During this period, daily testing has remained below 25,000 for the most part. Since 25 May, the highest tests done in a day was 22,758 tests on 30 May. According to the Health Promotion Bureau, 19,663 PCR tests were performed yesterday.

Among the patients detected yesterday are 1,917 persons from the New Year cluster. The country’s total COVID-19 detections have risen to 248,050.

The cumulative patient count of the Divulapitiya, Peliyagoda, Prisons and New Year clusters has risen to 240,842.

This includes 146,168 persons from the New Year cluster, 82,785 persons from the Peliyagoda cluster, 6,913 persons from the Prisons cluster, and 3,059 persons from the Divulapitiya cluster.

In addition to this, 4,942 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad and 328 foreigners make up the country’s imported cases.

Of the COVID-19 patients detected in the island to date, 59,667 are from Colombo, 42,860 persons are from Gampaha, 27,041 persons are from Kalutara, 13,332 persons are from Kurunegala and 12,956 persons are from Kandy.

During the third wave alone, 27,370 persons from Colombo, 24,326 persons from Gampaha and 19,983 persons from Kalutara have tested positive for COVID-19.

The district distribution of COVID-19 patients includes the 2,196 patients detected on Wednesday. According to the Department of Government Information, 436 persons from Gampaha, 324 persons from Kalutara, 318 persons from Colombo, 178 persons from Ratnapura and 121 persons from Kurunegala tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Among Wednesday’s patients were 2,142 persons from the New Year cluster, 36 persons from the Prisons cluster, and 18 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad.

At present, 32,456 persons are undergoing treatment for COVID-19, and 1,331 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are under observation at various treatment centres.

The country’s COVID-19 recoveries rose to 212,825, with 1,639 persons discharged yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Army stated that 542 persons were released from 19 quarantine centres yesterday. As of yesterday, 7,911 persons were undergoing quarantine in 73 quarantine centres.
