1,486 persons test positive for COVID-19 over the weekend

  • 746 persons test positive for COVID-19 yesterday, 7,975 PCR tests conducted
  • Total patient count rises to 567,682

  • Two families undergoing quarantine due to exposure to patient with Omicron variant

Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 case count rose to 567,682 with the detection of 1,486 COVID-19 positive persons over the weekend.

Yesterday, 746 persons tested positive for COVID-19. Of the patients, 742 were from the New Year cluster and four were overseas arrivals. The Health Promotion Bureau states that 7,975 PCR tests were conducted yesterday.

The previous day, 6,680 PCR tests and 3,352 rapid antigen tests were conducted and 740 patients linked to the New Year cluster were detected.

In total, 462,811 patients have been linked to the New Year cluster, while 82,785 patients have been linked to the Peliyagoda cluster, 9,054 patients have been linked to the Prisons cluster, and 3,059 patients have been linked to the Divulapitiya cluster.

The country’s imported cases are made up of 6,985 Sri Lankan overseas returnees and 328 foreigners.

The country’s patient count includes 115,430 persons from Colombo, 98,736 persons from Gampaha, 53,133 persons from Kalutara, 35,608 persons from Galle, and 27,675 persons from Kurunegala.

During the third wave of the pandemic, 83,133 persons from Colombo, 80,202 persons from Gampaha, and 46,075 persons from Kalutara tested positive for COVID-19.

At present, 10,895 persons are under medical or home-based care and 2,138 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are under observation.

The Epidemiology Unit states that 316 persons were released from care yesterday, raising the country’s COVID-19 recoveries to 542,326.

Meanwhile, public health inspectors (PHI) yesterday stated that the first patient with the Omicron variant detected in Sri Lanka will face legal action under the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance No.03 of 1897 along with any associates for failing to comply with regulations.

“Residents of the address provided by this individual at first will be quarantined as they have been exposed to her and so will the residents of the house she is currently at. Investigations are also being carried out to trace her contacts,” PHI Union President Upul Rohana said.
