JLR electrifies flagship Range Rover in strategic pivot to high-margin EV luxury
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has launched its first-ever fully electric luxury SUV, marking a critical milestone in the automaker's flexible propulsion strategy and a bid to dominate the ultra-premium EV market.
The Range Rover Electric integrates into the existing MLA-Flex architecture, allowing JLR to build Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and Battery Electric (BEV) models on the same production line in Solihull. This strategic manufacturing agility protects profit margins, optimises production efficiency, and ensures the brand can dynamically respond to shifting global powertrain demands.
By developing its 118.5kWh double-stacked battery and twin-motor electric drive units (EDUs) entirely in-house, JLR minimises supply chain reliance while controlling the critical intellectual property of its highest-margin vehicle. The vehicle represents JLR’s most aggressively patented product to date, with over 300 patent applications filed to protect proprietary technologies spanning thermal management, battery architecture, and electric traction control.
Range Rover Managing Director Martin Limpert said: “Range Rover Electric is the result of a decade of considered engineering and technological development, setting a new benchmark for the original luxury SUV. Electric propulsion is perfectly suited to the exquisite refinement of Range Rover, elevating the sense of calm and secluded sanctuary for occupants.
“At the same time, Range Rover breadth of capability is uncompromised thanks to the combination of a powerful, adaptable electric propulsion and advanced chassis technologies that make every Range Rover peerless, accomplished and desired. We took our testing and development programmes even further than originally intended to ensure Range Rover Electric is genuinely the most accomplished Range Rover ever.”
Key strategic and commercial advantages:
Manufacturing agility:
Assembled in Solihull on a shared architecture, utilising interchangeable under-bonnet components instead of a "frunk" to significantly reduce manufacturing complexity, lower production costs, and simplify ongoing vehicle ownership.
In-house vertical integration: JLR has completed a massive transformation of the Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre (EPMC) in Wolverhampton. Moving more than 500 employees into a space the size of 11 football pitches, the facility is scaled to produce 150,000 battery packs and 280,000 electric motors annually alongside traditional combustion engines.
Consumer confidence and lifecycle: To ensure ultimate peace of mind and bolster initial adoption rates among its high-net-worth clientele, JLR is backing the Range Rover Electric’s advanced propulsion system with a comprehensive eight-year/160,000km warranty.
“Range Rover Electric is the result of a decade of considered engineering and technological development, setting a new benchmark for the original luxury SUV. Electric propulsion is perfectly suited to the exquisite refinement of Range Rover, elevating the sense of calm and secluded sanctuary for occupants. At the same time, Range Rover breadth of capability is uncompromised thanks to the combination of a powerful, adaptable electric propulsion and advanced chassis technologies,” added Limpert.
The vehicle delivers a WLTP range of up to 372 miles (600km) and a real-world range of up to 333 miles, ensuring the vast majority of Range Rover clients can complete their typical daily journeys without utilising public charging infrastructure. When rapid charging is required, the 800-volt architecture allows the vehicle to charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 22 minutes using a 350kW DC public charger, directly addressing ultra-luxury consumer demands for minimised downtime.
JLR has also innovated in long-term asset management through a "Digital Twin" system. Each Range Rover Electric is paired with a continuously updated battery digital twin monitored by engineers at JLR’s global technology hubs. Using more than 900 diagnostic data points, the automaker can gather real-time intelligence on battery health, performance, and usage throughout its lifecycle. This enables proactive, optimised service readiness, ensuring a seamless ownership experience that protects the vehicle's long-term residual value. The Range Rover Electric is available to order now, positioning JLR to capture early market share in the rapidly electrifying VVIP automotive sector.
