RM Sotheby’s launches e-auction of F1 champs’ memorabilia

Over 280 unique pieces up for bidding on 24 July with lots closing between 29 and 30 July

RM Sotheby’s, the world’s largest collector car auction house, has announced an all-new online-only auction that will feature hundreds of pieces of sporting memorabilia from the likes of Formula 1 World Champions Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, and Lewis Hamilton.

The Champions – Schumacher and F1 Legends will open for bidding on 24 July, with lots closing between 29 and 30 July and will feature over 280 unique pieces offered entirely without reserve, said the statement from RM Sotheby’s.

The varied sale will include everything from race-worn helmets and race suits to pieces of bodywork from historic competition cars, with 35 highlight lots expected to go on display at Gut Kaltenbrunn in Tegernsee, Germany during the upcoming Concours of Elegance Germany on 25-26 July, it stated.

According to RM Sotheby’s, several artefacts from the life and career of Formula 1 and Ferrari legend Schumacher will headline the online sale, including a number of historically significant race suits.

Leading the selection is a 1997 Michael Schumacher Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 OMP Signed Racing Suit (in the € 30,000 to € 40,000 range) worn to victory during the 1997 Monaco Grand Prix.

From the previous season comes a 1996 Michael Schumacher Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 OMP Racing Suit (€ 20,000 - € 30,000) that the German wore during the Hockenheim race weekend, where he qualified on the podium and finished fourth overall.

A 1995 Michael Schumacher Benetton Formula 1 Sparco Signed Racing Suit (€ 15,000 - € 20,000) is a remarkable piece of memorabilia from Schumacher’s second Drivers’ World Championship-winning year, a season in which he also delivered Benetton its first and only Constructors’ World Championship.

Meanwhile, a 1992 Michael Schumacher Benetton Formula 1 Sparco Signed Racing Suit (€ 12,000 - € 15,000) offers a glimpse into the racer’s early Formula 1 career, having been worn to a third-place finish at the 1992 Mexico Grand Prix.

According to RM Sotheby’s, the sale also includes a handful of highly significant wrist watches with compelling motorsport history, including 1993 Jean Todt’s Personal Girard-Perregaux Automatic Chronograph Watch (€ 20,000 - € 30,000).

A prototype for the highly coveted model, the watch is numbered ‘00’ with the box engraved with the date 04/07/1993, it stated.

Also with fabulous competition history is a 1988 Gianni Agnelli Formula Ferrari by Cartier Automatic Watch (in the range of € 10,000 - € 20,000).

A personal gift from Enzo Ferrari to the legendary industry giant and playboy, it is engraved ‘l’Avvocato Gianni Agnelli’ and numbered 30 of 50, said RM Sotheby’s in a statement.

Helmets also feature prominently in the sale, with highlights including a 2005 Michael Schumacher Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 Schuberth RF1 Signed Helmet (€ 10,000 - € 15,000), a 1991 Michael Schumacher Benetton Formula 1 Arai Signed Helmet (€ 10,000 - € 15,000) commemorating the German ace’s debut and honouring engineer Gary Anderson, and, from the modern era of Formula 1, a 2022 Charles Leclerc Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 Bell Promotional Helmet by BS Designs.net (€ 10,000 - €15,000), it added.
