In today’s competitive business world, having a good product is not enough. There are so many products and services available in the market, all trying to attract more customers. As a consequence, customers are becoming more discerning, not just with what they want to buy but also with whom they want to buy it from. In this, we find another great truth applicable to modern entrepreneurship: before buying a product, people tend to "buy" the person behind that product.
Personal branding is one area that comes into play here. Personal branding is basically how a person presents themselves to the world. It consists of their values, their personality, their communication style, and their ability to create a certain impression on people. Personal branding is not just about promoting one’s self as an entrepreneur but rather about building trust with customers.
An important reason why personal branding is important is the value of trust in the purchasing process. In today’s environment, people are often surrounded by ads, which makes them skeptical about marketing. Therefore, they do not rely on marketing; instead, they want the story of the business, the entrepreneur, and the business itself. When the entrepreneur is open, people develop trust, which helps them feel connected with the business.
Psychological aspect
An important aspect of this is the psychological aspect of the people involved. People do not develop connections with products; they develop connections with people. A person has feelings, has gone through experiences, and has a story, while a product is just a simple object. The entrepreneur develops an emotional connection with the people by sharing their story, their struggles, their inspirations, and their achievements. Price, features, etc., may not influence the purchasing decision as much as this connection.
The importance of personal branding has increased even more with the advent of digital media. It has become easier than ever for the owner of the business to communicate with the audience through social media sites. The loyalty of the customers also increases through this direct communication, as they feel that they are part of the business.
For example, today, it has become quite common for businesses, especially small ones, to grow through social media sites such as Instagram or TikTok, not only because of the product but also because of the person behind the product. It is natural that the customers would want to know the process of how the product is being made, and the business would feel more relatable as they are able to show the hard work that goes behind the product.
Differentiation
One advantage that can be derived from differentiation is personal branding. The product can easily be replicated in the market. The competitors may even offer similar features, designs, or even a low-cost advantage. The personal brand, on the other hand, is difficult to replicate. Every entrepreneur has a unique voice, viewpoint, and story to tell. He/she is able to create a unique identity that differentiates him/her from competitors in the market through personal branding.
Young business owners or those with little funding will benefit a great deal from this. Creating a personal brand does not require one to spend a fortune. It requires consistency, sincerity, and communication. The business owners will not need to spend a fortune on advertising as they create a strong personal brand that attracts more customers through insightful communication.
Success of an entrepreneur
On the other hand, not only does personal branding attract customers, but it also helps create new opportunities. Entrepreneurs are likely to attract partnerships, collaborations, and even investors if they have a unique personal brand. This is because a good personal brand represents professionalism, confidence, and a sense of direction, which are the things that people find appealing.
Moreover, the success of an entrepreneur in the long run is facilitated by the creation of a good personal brand. A good personal brand is long-lasting, even if the business is changing, evolving, or even failing. Entrepreneurs who have been able to create a devoted fan base are likely to succeed even if their business fails, as they are likely to create another business. In this case, the success of the entrepreneur is not limited to the business; it is a long-lasting thing.
Additionally, long-term success is also achieved through personal branding. Personal branding is long-lasting because, despite changing, improving, or declining business, personal branding will remain. Entrepreneurs with a large following and a personal brand that is successful will be able to recover and start new business ventures. Personal branding is not just limited to one business. However, it is essential to understand that personal branding is not just about pretending to be someone that one is not. Being genuine is part of what makes a personal brand successful. Consumers are able to differentiate between people who are trying to impress or copy others and those that are being genuine. Entrepreneurs should focus on being genuine and showing their true passions, values, and strengths.
Consistency
Another key aspect is consistency. It is important for an entrepreneur to be consistent in their communication and image. This will, in the end, help them build trust as they continue to remain consistent in their image, whether it is on social media, in customer relations, or in public appearances. A personal brand can be developed by taking small steps for aspiring entrepreneurs. People can be influenced in terms of their perception through sharing information, expressing opinions, and engaging with people. This will, in the end, lead to a unique and powerful image.
There is much potential in personal branding in Sri Lanka. The youth are given an opportunity to showcase their skills and ideas to a larger audience through greater access to technology and interest in entrepreneurship. The youth can create powerful personal brands that focus on regional and international successes by combining creativity with communication skills. The message is clear at the end. The customer is not just buying a product in today’s business world; they are buying a connection, trust, and authenticity as well. The business owners can create this by using personal branding.
In conclusion, the statement that “before they buy your product, they buy you” is a reflection of a fundamental reality that surrounds entrepreneurship in this modern era. The personal brand is essential in that it allows entrepreneurs to connect with their audience, make a long-lasting impact, and ultimately be successful. For one to be successful in business, personal branding is not just essential but a necessity.
