Vision accomplished… in spite of the three years of pandemic and dire economic circumstances… The

Management Club continues to grow. 20 years ago the past President of the Chartered Management Institute UK SL Branch 1999/2001 and currently TMC’s President Emeritus M. Fayaz Saleem and CMI’s incoming President 2001/2002 Anil Weeratunge were of the opinion that whilst there were several associations, institutes and clubs, there was a need to bring together the professional managers, who are not only qualified in their respective fields but also have had relevant experience to perhaps add a “third” and important dimension to develop managerial leadership. That is the ability to sharpen their “networking” skills.

To achieve the sharpening of such an important skill, TMC organises very focussed events which will and has had multiple positive impacts on their rise in managerial leadership effectiveness. Some of such events were under the themes “Members Meet” and “Members Speak” and previously “Way Forward”. Sadly and most regrettably some of the events under these themes have been largely restricted firstly due to the pandemic, closely followed by the dire economic situation which certainly does not encourage anyone to get about freely… that said, the many or most of the events during the past three years have been limited to “virtual” meetings. They have been largely successful; however, the opportunity of meeting fellow members of varying disciplines and fields in “in person” events was not to be.

TMC would also organise their events in such a manner that often had a few members of the public and guests of members; all this provided the platform for members to have dual and sometimes triple opportunities of meeting the members of their clubs and perhaps a few from other clubs together with guests. Thereby the intrinsic value of “networking” often increases.

Such events have also helped those in different fields of employment or for that matter of varying levels of leadership to exchange thoughts and ideas, which have quite naturally enhanced their knowledge, sharpened their “networking skills” and even their leadership behaviour and more.

TMC also believes that the basic principles of “soft skills” such as interpersonal/interactive and indeed communication skills, all have a way of adding so much value to the professional manager in his quest to reach higher levels of professionalism. However, networking skills alone will not necessarily enhance the managers’ marketability; there are other aspects too.

Under the theme “Members Speak” TMC created opportunities for members to be invited to speak on a current topic or on a subject that would interest other members. It has been said on occasions that some corporate leaders lack the ability to get on a platform and deliver a well-thought, well-compiled speech and indeed respond effectively in a question and answer session which follows such presentations. The age old phenomena of “fear of failure” is also overcome, and often found such individuals have developed the confidence to make useful speeches and presentations in their corporate and social life.

The vision of TMC to bring together professional managers so that they may “Meet and Greet” one another and exchange thoughts and ideas, thus developing both their networking and interpersonal skills, has been achieved.
