A Sleepless Christmas Eve, presented by The English Drama Society of Royal College in association with Anonymous Productions, will be staged today, 6 and tomorrow 7 January at the Lionel Wendt Theatre, offering audiences a Christmas story intentionally told beyond the traditional season.
Written and produced by Angelo Pereira of Anonymous Productions, and directed by Thushara Hettihamu and Ruchith Ranasinghe, the play centres around Lenny, an orphan determined to deliver a letter to Santa on Christmas Eve. Along his journey, he encounters Robbie, and the two form an unlikely friendship. Choosing to travel together, their shared journey becomes one of discovery, moments of trust, and hope as the night unfolds.
The production features a talented ensemble cast with choral direction by Kumudini Perera-David and Haasinee Andrée. Complementing this is the live orchestra by the Halpé Andrée School of Music, creating a fully immersive theatrical experience.
Beyond the stage, A Sleepless Christmas Eve also functions as a flood relief initiative, with the majority of the proceeds directed towards children and families affected by the recent cyclone in Sri Lanka. The social aspect of the production reflects its core with Lenny’s experience as an orphan highlighting the realities faced by many children whose lives have been disrupted by natural disasters.
As the new year begins, A Sleepless Christmas Eve invites audiences to pause and reconnect with the quieter spirit of the season, a spirit measured not by festivities, but by small acts of compassion and care. By uniting art with social responsibility, the production positions theatre as both a mirror and a means of action, demonstrating how stories can lead to tangible change.
Tickets for the performances for today, 6 and tomorrow, 7 January are accessible through the production’s official channels by Anonymous Productions and The English Drama Society of Royal College.
