An exciting weekend of activities will be held in Kalpitiya as preparations are in full swing for Sri Lanka’s first-ever Red Bull Kite Surfing race scheduled to be held on 7 and 8 July.

Divyaa Lagoon Resort – the only luxury boutique hotel in Kalpitiya – will play host to the event including a fantastic after-party on Saturday night with DJs, BBQs, cocktails and more.

On Saturday morning guests and visitors can enjoy watching the exciting kite surf race. On Sunday morning there will be an array of kite surfing stunt exhibitions on the beautiful wide beaches stretching across Divyaa Lagoon.

Zarook Marikkar, Chairman of Divyaa Lagoon Resorts, said: “We’re excited that Red Bull is bringing competitive kite surfing to the Kalpitiya region. Fast gaining reputation as probably one of the best kite surfing locations in the world let alone in Sri Lanka, this event will showcase the diverse nature of this up and coming new tourism zone in our country.”

The most anticipated event of the year kicks off next weekend on 7 and 8 July, catering to both local and foreign visitors – a break from the everyday monotony, this adventure sport promises to be a thrilling spectacle for everyone.

Local kite surfers from around the country as well from all parts of the world will gather in this sought after tourism destination to witness the speed and skill levels of these kite surfers.

The race involves kite surfers hopping from one island to the other off the North Western Puttalam Peninsula during the race and then making their way towards the ultra flat Kalpitiya Lagoon in front of the sand bank opposite the Divyaa Lagoon Resort.

With ideal conditions and a vast open sand bank sandwiched between the lagoon and the ocean, right in front of Divyaa, Kalpitiya is the ideal location for kite surfing in Sri Lanka.

Situated about 160km north of Colombo, in the Puttalam District, of the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, Kalpitiya is a three-hour journey from Colombo.

The bay of Kalpitiya is surrounded by sandy beaches and lagoon inlet of shallow water. The beach is flat and uniquely beautiful, providing a very soothing effect on the mind and feet. Its panoramic views and clear, cool waters are ideal for swimming which has made it a much-adored destination by holidaymakers.

The amazing tranquillity of the beach provides the perfect setting for moments of blissful solitude, with gentle waters lapping at your feet. For more adventurous vacationers, the four km-long wide and sunny beaches provide a great location for bathing, windsurfing and water skiing, as well as coral snorkelling and dolphin watching.

Red Bull Island Hopping is the first ever kite surfing race to be held in Sri Lanka, an event soon to be on the global calendar of adventure sports competitions.
