Geological Survey and Mines Bureau goes high tech with SLT Communication Solutions

Sri Lanka’s Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB), the Government institution empowered to map the country’s geology and explore mineral resources regulating their extraction, processing, trading and exports, has signed an agreement with Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), the national telecommunication service provider, to upgrade their ICT infrastructure to receive real time seismic data and serve the nation with updated information, development efforts and disaster minimisation.
This agreement was officially signed by Senarath Jayasundara, the Chairman, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau and Janaka Abeysinghe, the General Manager/Enterprise Sales, Sri Lanka Telecom.
Under the agreement, SLT will provide ultra high speed communication infrastructure by laying the most reliable optical fibre in the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau premises to provide high speed broadband access to the information sources. Also the company has already completed the GSMB internal computer network including multiple sites and facilitated broadband internet and data access for the staff.
Commenting on the agreement, GSMB Chairman Senarath Jayasundara said: “It would be beneficial to have high capacity information connectivity to strengthen our overall quality of operations for a better future and plan activities in the next few years. Through SLT’s communication solution, we expect to disseminate updated information in the community to enhance public understanding of geosciences and raise awareness on environmental issues.”
The GSMB contributes to advance the geoscientific knowledge on Sri Lanka’s landmass as well as its onshore features. Systematic geological mapping, mineral investigation and other geologic data capturing have generated a wealth of geoscientific data that are of great value for economic development as well as scientific research.
Kiththi Perera, the Chief Enterprise and Wholesale Officer of SLT said: “GSMB is SLT’s newest enterprise customer, connected to our state-of-the-art metro Ethernet communication network, which provides Fibre-To-The-Building (FTTB) capabilities that empower their day-to-day operations. Maintaining a dynamic integrated information technology infrastructure will lead GSMB to address both organisational and client needs efficiently on time.”
He further stated: “We have realised that the success of any industry or any institution depends on the contribution, knowledge and experiences of the organisations that make up the industry. Therefore, the enhancing and sharing of global knowledge is a must to enable members of any discipline to obtain the relevant experience. This is something that we always encourage. Commenting on the agreement, General Manager (Enterprise Sales) of SLT Janaka Abeysinghe said: “Advanced ICT systems will enable GSMB to promote and enhance their scientific studies and research that may be useful in environmental monitoring, disaster mitigation and help to enhance the geological understanding of the country. Especially in the fields of disaster management, modern ICT systems can be used to provide effective solutions to the problems caused by environmental changes such as droughts, floods, cyclones, tsunamis, extinction of species, endemic diseases and threats to food cultivation.”
