The ‘Tech Leaders Connect ’26’ conference, organised by the BCS – The Chartered Institute for IT Sri Lanka Section was held recently at the Courtyard by Marriott, Colombo, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and professionals to discuss the future trajectory of the country’s digital economy.
The event aimed to raise awareness among key stakeholders on the opportunities and challenges expected to shape the country’s digital landscape over the next decade, with a particular focus on aligning policy, industry readiness, and institutional capacity.
Digital Economy Deputy Minister Eng. Eranga Weeraratne, who attended as Chief Guest, outlined the Government’s long-term digital vision and the steps being taken to translate that vision into practical outcomes.
He stressed that Sri Lanka’s digital strategy must move beyond the basic adoption of technology and instead focus on building a fully integrated digital ecosystem that is deeply embedded in citizens’ daily lives and the national economy.
Eng. Weeraratne identified several priorities critical to achieving this goal, including the establishment of secure, resilient digital infrastructure that is accessible to all citizens. He also highlighted the need to enhance transparency and efficiency through data-driven governance, while nurturing a culture of innovation capable of competing in global markets.
The Deputy Minister also elaborated on measures already under way to advance the digital agenda, noting that the Government has prioritised the digitalisation of public services and the fast-tracking of the national digital identity system as key enablers of broader transformation.
At the same time, Eng. Weeraratne acknowledged significant challenges in implementation. These include the need to modernise outdated legal frameworks, ensure effective management of financial resources, and address the ongoing difficulty of retaining skilled digital professionals within the country.
The keynote address was delivered by Sysco LABS Sri Lanka Managing Director Tushera Kawdawatta, who shared insights from an industry perspective on innovation, talent development, and global competitiveness.
The conference also featured a panel discussion with Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe and Digital Economy Ministry Acting Secretary Waruna Sri Dhanapala. Moderated by Alanzo Doll, the discussion explored industry readiness for large-scale digital transformation, capacity building, and the role and responsibilities of professional institutions in supporting Sri Lanka’s digital ambitions.
Organisers noted that Tech Leaders Connect ’26 served as a timely platform for constructive dialogue between the public and private sectors, as Sri Lanka positions itself to harness digital technologies as a driver of inclusive and sustainable economic growth over the coming decade.
