Sri Lanka, Bangladesh explore enhancing of cooperation in ICT

High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Bangladesh Dharmapala Weerakkody, accompanied by Counsellor – Commerce Srimali Jayarathne, held a productive meeting with the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) Associate Committee Chairman Rafel Kabir and committee members, on 27 April at the BASIS office in Dhaka. 

The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration in the ICT sector between the two countries for mutual benefit.

During the discussion, High Commissioner Weerakkody provided an overview of Sri Lanka’s current IT industry status and capacity, along with the Government’s vision for promoting it as a key export-oriented service industry. He highlighted the promising investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s IT sector and incentives available for foreign investors. Furthermore, the High Commissioner also proposed potential avenues for collaboration between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, particularly in the areas of software development, business process outsourcing (BPO), knowledge sharing, capacity building, and joint ventures. He also extended an invitation to BASIS to participate in “Disrupt Asia 2025”, the premier ICT event organised by the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka, scheduled to be held in Colombo in September 2025, along with the interested stakeholders in the Bangladesh IT industry.

In response, the BASIS Chairman and committee members expressed their interest in connecting with their counterparts in Sri Lanka to explore opportunities for joint collaboration in the IT field and to engage in interactive discussions. Further, the BASIS committee members expressed their willingness to connect with Sri Lankan IT companies visiting Bangladesh in pursuit of collaboration opportunities.
