Workshop on workplace cooperation for HR and Compliance Managers in apparel sector

The International Labour Organisation’s Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives together with the Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association, conducted a one day training program on workplace cooperation for Human Resources Managers and Compliance Managers in the apparel sector on 6 August in Colombo.

The program focussing on international labour standards, ILO conventions and industrial relations issues specific to the apparel sector, also contained an in depth session on communication and conflict resolution. Emphasis was laid on the importance of proactively engaging with worker representative bodies such as trade unions, employee councils and welfare committees. 

The program was conducted by a renowned panel of experts, namely ILO retired Senior Employers’ Specialist Gotabaya Dassanayake, EFC Deputy Director General Vajira Ellepola, Centre for Poverty Analysis Former Head Priyanthi Fernando and ILO Project Promoting Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work National Program Manager Shyama Salgado. 

Speaking at the inauguration of this event, ILO Senior Program Officer Indra Tudawe stated, “The Government has taken many steps together with the Employers Federation of Ceylon and workers representatives to ensure that rights of both employers and workers are protected. However, there is still work left to be done.” Representing the Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association, Quantum Intimates Sri Lanka Country Manager Yohan Lawrence emphasised, “Workplace cooperation is essential to ensure industrial harmony which is vital for the sustainability of the apparel industry in Sri Lanka.” The program was attended by over 50 HR managers in the apparel sector.
