Kelani Cables extended their partnership project ‘Kelani Saviya’ with the University of Peradeniya last week for another five years following the expiration of the original contract.

The agreement is based on promoting collaborative activities such as carrying out joint undergraduate projects leading to increased performance of electrical cables in power systems and in different industrial and domestic environments. Other activities include hosting joint postgraduate research projects leading to long term strategic product development in areas of power system cables, cable insulation and diagnostics, exchange of technical, research and educational publications essential for the progress of the latter and to act as partners in relevant forums for electricians.

Initially signed in January 2007, the collaboration has been a highly successful one, especially the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programs for electricians through which local electricians were given a one-year skill development program to bring them up to mark with the modern developments in the industry. Held in three stages and concluding with a final examination, the electricians who qualify receive a certificate from the University of Peradeniya. All costs for the program are borne by Kelani Cables.

“Through this they will be able to negotiate a higher price for their work,” Kelani Cables CEO Mahinda Saranapala said. “We are proud to be part of this endeavour and consider ourselves lucky to be able to forge a partnership with the University of Peradeniya.” The results have been better than expected, he added.

University of Peradeniya Vice Chancellor Prof. S.B.S. Abeykoon who has been involved with the program since its inception stated that the university, which educates and produces graduates, does it using the money of the common people and therefore has a responsibility to give back to society. “It is our responsibility to do as much as we can. This programme and partnership is one such way of giving back.” However, to do this successfully private sector support is vital, he said. Abeykoon added that the successful completion rate for the program is 40 per cent.

At the event held last week, certificates for 31 electricians who passed the latest exam of the CPG program were handed over by Abeykoon and Saranapala.
