The CEO Power Breakfast Forum ‘How HR and Good Governance Can Drive Any Business’ organised by IPM Sri Lanka – the pioneer professional body and leader in human resources management in Sri Lanka – was well attended by over 100 business leaders representing a wide cross section of industries including retail, telecommunications, education, banking and finance, FMCG and insurance. The CEOs Power Breakfast Forum is a prelude to the Annual National HR Conference which is considered as an important annual event in IPM’s calendar of activities to engage the business leaders and HR fraternity for the purpose of sharing and exchanging ideas on current market trends and their impact on human resource management practices. The keynote speakers at this event – Deputy Minister of Highways, Higher Education and Investment Promotion Eran Wickramaratne and world renowned HR expert and India’s most respected HR academician, writer and speaker Professor T.V. Rao – kept the audience engaged throughout the session with their thoughts and insights. In his address, Wickramaratne stated that all should participate and get involved in order to bring about good governance in the country. “Good governance is the application of the rule of law. It also requires a change in culture of the people,” he added. Speaking about the public sector, Wickramaratne emphasised that the over 1.4 million strong public sector in Sri Lanka was one of the most important HR assets in the country and that they should be thoroughly trained, appropriately remunerated and incentivised in order to enhance their contribution to the economy. Prof. Rao in his address stated that good governance can be achieved with accountability and that human resources is the most important single factor in a country’s economic development. “All development comes from the human mind and development holds the key to innovation and growth. Globalisation has made access to capital and technology easier and increased the spread and speed of information flow,” said Prof. Rao. “Thus, the only thing remaining unique is human resources. The survival and growth of any country, business or organisation will depend on its ability to spot, develop, utilize and retain this human capital,” he added. IPM Sri Lanka keeps pace with the new trends and concepts in HR by engaging continuously with the business community to share experiences, thoughts and insights in order to enrich and enhance the HR profession which is the most important factor in driving business and good governance in all sectors of the country. IPM was founded in 1959 and was subsequently incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1976. IPM is affiliated to the Asia Pacific Foundation of Human Resources Management and also to the World Federation of People Management Association. IPM, being a professional institute is also a constituent member of the Organization of Professional Associations [OPA] Sri Lanka.
