Institute of Architects holds AGM 2012

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the SLIA (Sri Lanka Institute of Architects) took place on 25 February 2012 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).

The AGM came to pass as one of the many significant components of the ‘Architect 2012’ – the 30th Annual Sessions of the SLIA.

The Annual General Meeting saw the electing of seven members to the Council of the SLIA. Issues on the membership and profession, progress made up to now and future plans of the SLIA were discussed by the membership present at the occasion.

Themed as ‘Regenerating Sri Lanka, the Architect and the Built Environment’ the 2012 Annual Sessions aimed to contribute to the government’s focus of making Sri Lanka the Wonder of Asia

The SLIA was established in 1957; in 1976 it was incorporated under an Act of Parliament and since then functions as the professional governing body of Sri Lankan architects. Currently consisting of over 1000 members its primary purpose remains regulating architectural education and practice of the country.

Speaking in relation to the 2012 Annual Sessions, Archt. Ranjan Nadesapillai, President of SLIA, said, “With the end of the war and the dawn of peace, Sri Lanka is reborn and this is what we want to promote through this year’s annual sessions. It is not only the spirit that needs to be regenerated but also the built environment, that is the reason behind this year’s theme.”

The Annual Session of 2012 also included a grand Inauguration Ceremony on the 22nd of February, the Trade and Work Exhibition opened to the public on the 22nd and continued till the 26th, the National Conference was held on the 23rd and a Fellowship Night of celebrations held on the 25th for a festive closing.
