Top Canadian Doctor to deliver lecture on Dementia

On Wednesday, 10 November 2010, twin public lectures entitled ‘Dementia 2010’ would be  delivered by an eminent Canadian, Dr. Lynn Beattie, Professor Emeritus, University of British Columbia Department of Geriatric Medicine who is visiting Sri Lanka at the invitation of the Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation.

In keeping with the continuing efforts made by the Foundation to create awareness of the risks and dimensions of dementia, Dr. Beattie is scheduled to speak at the Sri Lanka Medical Association’s auditorium at 12.15 p.m. (noon) and at the Lanka Hospital’s auditorium at 6 p.m.

Dr. Beattie has a general interest in clinical geriatrics with a particular interest in dementia care, especially diagnosis and treatment of disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Beattie is interested in furthering the understanding around treatment interventions that promote functional capacity and quality of life in persons with dementia including working with families and health service providers. She is the Director of the Clinic for Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias at the University of British Columbia Hospital, which provides a rich clinical setting for the diagnosis and treatment of referral patients, and for conducting research.

There is a distinctive plethora of academic and applied research on various topics relating to Alzheimer’s and related dementias credited to the distinguished Professor. Among others, Dr. Beattie serves as a co-leader for the British Columbia Network for Aging Research; she is involved with many additional activities aimed at improving capacity for aging research initiatives in British Columbia and beyond. Dr. Beattie is the former Chair of the Research Policy Committee of the Alzheimer Society of Canada; a member of the Board of the Pacific Alzheimer Research Foundation; and Scientific Director of the Providence Health Care Centre for Healthy Aging, the largest faith based health care organisation in Canada.
