Faculty of Medicine Ragama gears up for ‘MEDKEL 2016’ medical exhibition

The Faculty of Medicine University of Kelaniya is in the process of preparing to deliver an unparalleled experience to the country. In celebration of the 25th year anniversary of the Institute ‘MEDKEL 2016’ will be held from 23 to 29 September at the Faculty premises in Ragama.

The Faculty started as a private Medical Faculty in 1991 has made significant progress both nationally and globally over the past 25 years. The Institute has produced renowned clinicians who have made significant impact in diverse specialities in the medical field. The institute boasts of a strong research culture that has been acclaimed and recognised globally. 

Starting from zero within 25 years the Faculty has reached a measurable research output of over 1,000 publications listed on Google Scholar; 500 indexed PubMed; over 10,500 citations and an H-index of 46. The drive, commitment, pragmatism and innovation that adapted by the academia and clinicians attached to the Faculty are recognised as key factors in this success achieved in a resource-poor setting.

The Faculty is the only institute in the country that offers a degree program in Speech and Hearing Sciences for the professions of Audiology and Speech and Language Therapy. The Department of Disability Studies adapts a strong research culture and evidence based practice that looks to the advancement of providing servicers for children and adults with disabilities. A multidisciplinary approach in to the treatment and management of Persons with Disabilities is followed at the Faculty that draws in the collaboration of many professionals. 

The Medical Exhibition celebrating 25 years of the Faculty will be held under the theme ‘Medical knowledge for a healthier tomorrow’. The exhibition will educate the public on various specialities of the medial field bringing in and showing forth the newest inventions in technology. Some of the special features that will be at the exhibition will be 3D experience in to human organs, awareness on early detection and treatment for a range of medical conditions, educational seminars and advocacy and service provision strategies for persons with disabilities in Sri Lanka. The Exhibition will function under six different zones giving in-depth knowledge insight into the following areas: ‘Communicable Diseases’, ‘Non-communicable Diseases’, ‘Trauma’, ‘Mental Health, ‘Growth and Development’ and ‘Special Areas’.
