Ninewells breaks ground on landmark expansion to redefine surgical care

• New facility to expand surgical capabilities and elevate patient care with advanced medical infrastructure

Ninewells Hospital recently broke ground on its new medical and surgical complex, marking a significant step forward in advancing specialised healthcare and strengthening Sri Lanka’s private health sector.

The ceremony, graced by Chief Guest Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, alongside Access Group Chairman Sumal Perera, the Boards of Directors of Ninewells Hospital and the Access Group and other distinguished invitees, signalled the start of a major expansion aimed at enhancing surgical capacity and medical innovation.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Jayatissa emphasised the importance of private sector investment in transforming Sri Lanka into a competitive destination for health tourism.

“This groundbreaking marks not only a milestone for Ninewells Hospital but also a step forward for Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector. Institutions such as Ninewells play a crucial role in elevating our standards and attracting international patients seeking high-quality, affordable medical care,” he said.

He noted that Sri Lanka has strong potential to emerge as a regional healthcare hub, supported by its skilled medical professionals, improving infrastructure and reputation for patient-centred care.

“Health tourism is an area with immense opportunity. With continued investment in advanced facilities and services, Sri Lanka can position itself as a preferred destination for specialised treatment in the region,” he added.

The proposed development will feature a 14-storey medical and surgical complex with over 125 beds, spanning approximately 200,000 square feet. The facility is expected to significantly enhance Ninewells’ surgical capabilities while introducing state-of-the-art technology and modern patient care environments.

Dr. Jayatissa also commended Ninewells Hospital for its contribution to the healthcare sector since its establishment in 2004, particularly in women’s and children’s care.

“The institution has built a strong reputation over the years and continues to evolve through innovation and new healthcare programs. This expansion reflects its commitment to meeting the changing needs of patients while supporting the broader national healthcare system,” he said.

Ninewells Hospital Director and CEO Dr. Vibash Wijeratne said the expansion reflects the hospital’s vision for the future, as it broadens its scope into surgical specialties while maintaining its focus on compassionate, patient-centred care.

The investment for the project is estimated between Rs.5–6 billion and is expected to be completed within two years, underscoring a long-term growth strategy. Among the key developments is a proposed state-of-the-art cardiology centre to be built on the existing car park premises.

The facility is expected to provide advanced cardiovascular services, helping to ease long waiting times in the public healthcare system while strengthening Sri Lanka’s capacity in specialised care.

Ninewells Hospital aims to expand its capacity, integrate advanced medical technologies and further elevate patient care standards. The initiative reflects a broader vision of strengthening the private healthcare sector while meeting the growing demand for specialised and accessible medical services.

Once completed, the new complex is expected to improve accessibility, increase capacity and further strengthen Sri Lanka’s position in both local and international healthcare markets.
