AHK Sri Lanka and Minister Dr. Jayatissa in strategic dialogue to strengthen healthcare sector

In a significant step toward enhancing Sri Lanka’s healthcare system, Delegate of the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Sri Lanka (AHK Sri Lanka) Chief Martin Klose held a high-level, solution-oriented discussion with Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa recently.

Klose highlighted the longstanding presence and contribution of renowned German healthcare companies—including Siemens, B. Braun, Linde, Fresenius, Dräger, and ZEISS—which have supported Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector for decades with cutting-edge medical technology and global expertise.

Joining Klose at the meeting were AHK Sri Lanka Head of Corporate Affairs and Export Promotion Malintha Gajanayake and Project Manager Sabrina Kolb, further underscoring the delegation’s commitment to fostering strategic dialogue and collaboration in the sector.

During the meeting, AHK Sri Lanka presented a position paper to Health Minister, outlining:

Key challenges currently faced by the healthcare industry; potential risks these challenges pose to patient safety and a set of internationally recommended best practices to address these issues effectively and sustainably.

Both parties recognised the importance of establishing a structured platform for continuous dialogue between the Ministry of Health and German healthcare stakeholders. This initiative aims to bridge regulatory and operational gaps and foster collaboration to ensure the highest standards of healthcare delivery for Sri Lankan citizens.

AHK Sri Lanka further emphasised the urgent need to accelerate the digitalisation of healthcare-related processes—particularly in product registration and supply chain traceability. These improvements are essential to enhancing transparency, operational efficiency, and investor confidence, while also encouraging increased foreign direct investment in the sector.

Additionally, AHK Sri Lanka extended an open invitation to the Ministry of Health for continued collaboration in areas such as training, capacity building, knowledge-sharing, and the transfer of technical know-how from Germany’s world-class healthcare ecosystem.

Health Minister Dr. Jayatissa acknowledged the challenges facing the healthcare sector and demonstrated a commendable openness to critically evaluating existing systems and exploring constructive, forward-thinking solutions.

A follow-up meeting will be held between the Ministry’s operational team—including representatives from the Directorate General of Health Services, the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA), the Medical Supplies Division (MSD), and the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation of Sri Lanka (SPC)—and members of the AHK Sri Lanka Medical and Health Sector Committee to further elaborate on technical aspects and implementation pathways.

This engagement marks a continued commitment to advancing Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector through innovation, dialogue, and trusted international partnerships.
