If Loving Kindness Meditation is conceptualised into classroom activities it would not create inhumanity in youth who take pleasure in tormenting fellow students

Below is an ideation by the Harmony Page on how Peace Commemoration in the month of May can be enhanced through Buddhistic and other spiritual practices carried out during the rest of the year, helping to mould compassionate adults who will not seek joy in the sorrow of others. If Loving Kindness Meditation is conceptualised into classroom activities it would not create inhumanity in youth who take pleasure in tormenting fellow students, to the point of death, as seen in Sri Lankan universities where the ragging menace occurs.

1.The practice of Loving Kindness Meditation introduced in all schools from primary classes in Sri Lanka will give a foundation for compassion and empathy aimed at dispelling terrors such as violence based ragging at universities and dispel racial biases.

For Christian, Hindu and Muslim schools to adopt meditation and contemplation as relevant to their religions – introduced alongside some understanding of comparative spirituality – so that religion is used to unite and not divide, gleaning and using whatever that is useful from all religions to become better humans.

2.For Sri Lanka to introduce common platforms for encouraging practices such as consciousness and reflection based meditation for promoting mental wellbeing irrespective of religious confines.

3.The possibility of unified worship to be explored, highlighting the commonalities of religions and the values of peace and unity.

4.For policy makers in Sri Lanka to introduce one nationwide commemorating model for remembering 18 May as a day that upholds values of peace and declare May as the national month of Peace and Unity.

For the teachings of the Buddha to be used in all national policy creation; so that Sri Lanka becomes a country that truly practices Buddhism in governance.

5.Where all schools are guided to celebrate the concept of peace annually in the month of May, highlighting what religious founders have taught on peace and how to achieve it.

6.Where a deep understanding on the Buddhistic terms of Metta, Muditha and Karuna are promoted especially in Buddhist schools.

7.For May 2026 to unveil a symbolic common peace memorial, however small in stature, that will especially guide civilians of all ethnicities and religions to appreciate the importance of empathetic problem solving.

8.For the current leaders of Sri Lanka to lay a strong platform to ensure that unrest, riots, terror and civil war never raises its head again and to do so using the crux of Buddhist teachings.
