Sri Lanka’s first drive-through bakery: The Bakery at the Edge

With the rebranding and revamping of Waters Edge, Battaramulla, the renowned hotel moved its patisserie to an easily accessible space in December. Visiting at the opening day on 12 December, I managed to have a taste test of most of the goodies that are made available at ‘The Bakery at the Edge’. What differentiates this bakery from other bakeries in town is that you can pick up a cake, buy a bouquet of flowers and pick up a card on your way to work or on your way back home. If that is what you have in mind, this is the ideal place. I got hooked on the baked goodies from Waters Edge years ago, when I tasted their Chocolate Doughnut (Rs. 140) and Triple Layer Chocolate Mousse Cup (Rs. 300). Their Chocolate Fudge (Rs.2800) and Opera (Rs. 2,800) cakes are some of the best I have tasted. The cakes are rich in flavour and are fresh from the oven, so you might want to pick up that cake as early as possible. You can also place orders for special occasions and get a custom cake designed and baked. Their breakfast pastries range from croissants to muffins and are priced between Rs. 100-Rs. 400. Open sandwiches are priced between Rs. 200-Rs. 400 and come in chicken, seafood and vegetarian varieties. The waffles are priced between Rs. 400-Rs. 600 and are served with devilled prawn and cheese, beef bolognaise and syrup. Savoury items on the menu can be bought under Rs. 200 while the sweet goodies are charged according to the number of pieces or grams involved. Whole cakes can be bought for under Rs. 4,000 and are packed in an easy carry bag. They also offer an interesting range of ice creams priced under Rs. 250 per scoop. Apart from the drive-through, the bakery also has an outdoor seating area as well as some bar chairs with tables inside. The flowers are supplied by Lassana Flora and they have bouquets priced at Rs. 2,200 and above. You can also buy various bread types which are neatly displayed inside the bakery.
