To mark the 150th anniversary of the Kandy Club, a coffee table book titled “Journey of The Kandy Club,” chronicling the history of the Club, was officially launched recently.
The book chronicles the rich history of the Club and its famous members including Leonard Woolf who served in Kandy for a year starting from August 1907 before his transfer as Acting Assistant Government Agent to the Hambantota District.
The Club was founded in 1877 and was housed initially in what was then the first nursing home in Kandy. Later it moved to Haramby House (now Hotel Suisse). The Club thereon moved its premises to two other locations before settling into its current premises in April 1948 having acquired the present property on Malabar Street.
The Chief Guest at the book launch was Professor Sarath Abeykoon who was presented a copy of the book by Club President Palitha Pethiyagoda and Secretary Rienzie Nanayakkara.
Since its launch, the British Library, King’s Cross, has accepted a copy of our book to deposit in their South Asia Section. Being the National Library of the UK, the acceptance of the book is a massive recognition for the historic club.
