Premiere of “Asu” – the tale of a mother’s love

The premiere of “Asu” was held recently at the PVR Cinema Complex with First Lady Maithree Wickremeasinghe as the Chief Guest.  

Based on a true story, “Asu” is a tale of a mother’s love. It is inspired by the story of Indira Jayasuriya, the beloved daughter of former Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya. The film celebrates a mother’s unwavering love, her battles against cancer, the sacrifices made for the life of her unborn son.

The film is produced and directed by locally and internationally awarded filmmaker Sanjeewa Pushpakumara, whilst the co-producer is Amil Abeysundara. Associate producers are Renuka Balasooriya and Suranga Handapangoda. Scripted by Sanjeewa Pushpakumara and Sangeetha Nilnadee Godagama, cinematography of “Asu” is by Vishwa Balasooriya and the editor is Ajith Ramanayake.

The film is presented by Sapushpa Expressions and Petra Films.

Cast includes Shyam Fernando, Dinara Punchihewa, Udari Warnakulasooriya, Chandani Senevirathne, Somarathne Dissanayake, Athula Veragoda and Yasodha Rasaduni. 

Based on a true story, the film revolves around Nelum, a six-months pregnant and 31 years old mother. Her happy family is shocked when she is diagnosed with a late stage of breast cancer. Not wanting to put the unborn baby’s life in danger, Nelum vehemently refuses any medical treatment and decides bravely to battle cancer. Her decision puts the doctors in dilemma and despairs of the husband, who wants to choose her loving wife over the unborn.
