Doctor Zoo – an engaging read for animal lovers

The first book to be published locally, which focuses on the discipline of zoo veterinary practice – Saththuwatte Dosthara (Doctor Zoo), authored by Dr. Jagath Jayasekara was launched last week at the National Library and Documentation Services Board.

The book is a composition of vivid accounts of treating a wide range of animals such as elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, giraffes, oryx, chimpanzees, orangutans, anacondas, arapaima, sea lions, tigers, and many more. The book also provides detailed accounts of emergency anesthesia procedures, special surgeries, and other related narratives. The colour photographs complement the content of the publication.

The author, Dr. Jayasekara who served the Department of National Zoological Gardens as a veterinary surgeon for seven years counts many years of experience in the State sector, including his stints at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and Veterinary Investigation Centre in Welisara. A product of Ananda College Colombo and the University of Peradeniya, Dr. Jayasekara is also an explorer and an avid writer. His recent publication which is very readable can be enjoyed by not only those in the veterinary field but by any animal-loving general reader. The book, originally written in Sinhala, is soon to be translated into English.
