An unforgettable evening of music and inspiration awaits on 4 April from 5.30 p.m. as renowned Australian singer Derrick Junkeer takes the stage alongside Bright Light, the visually impaired students of the Riversheen School of Music at the MJF Centre, Moratuwa.
This unique collaboration brings together international excellence and extraordinary local talent. Bright Light has been working tirelessly to meet the demands of backing a world class performer, expanding their English repertoire in preparation for this special performance.
Derrick Junkeer known for his captivating “velvet voice,” is set to mesmerise the audience with timeless classics and evergreen hits, including his popular song “Born Free.” For Melantha, founder and teacher at Riversheen, this moment is deeply personal recalling how he first fell in love with the song as a teenager when he saw it on TV, and now eagerly anticipating hearing it performed live.
Adding to the excitement, Bright Light will also launch their fourth original song, titled “Awurudu Kaale,” marking an important milestone in their musical journey.
Reflecting on the band’s journey, Melantha shared how the initiative began during his voluntary work at the MJF Centre, teaching underprivileged and special needs children.
Encouraged by the Centre Head Rehana Weththasinghe, he took on the challenge of training visually impaired students an effort that has now grown into a remarkable musical ensemble.
He expressed his deep gratitude to the MJF Centre for providing the space and facilities necessary for rehearsals, as well as to the many individuals who supported the band along the way. Special recognition was given to Samath Fernando, who has been a key supporter of the project from its early stages.
“This journey has not been easy,” Melantha noted, “but with the support of many generous individuals, I have been blessed with the opportunity to guide these talented young musicians and showcase their abilities.”
Beyond music, Bright Light will also present elements of performance and acting, offering the audience a dynamic and engaging experience.
The band considers it a great honour to perform alongside an artist of such high calibre, and they are eager to entertain and inspire all those in attendance. Melantha also extended heartfelt thanks to Derrick Junkeer for his vision and generosity in creating this opportunity delivering a powerful message that music knows no barriers, even in the face of disability.
“A Concert Beyond Vision” promises to be a truly inspiring and memorable evening one that celebrates talent, resilience, and the unifying power of music.
