The Government has decided to grant a fuel subsidy to private bus owners, school vans and three wheeler operators. A kerosene coupon will be issued to the low income families.
Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera told the Daily FT that cost of the relief scheme estimated to be around Rs. 4-5 billion will be met via tax revenue from fuel as well as savings from the reduced losses on CPC following the hike.
He said private bus operators will be given a subsidy amounting to the fuel price increase on the average kilometer of the route for 25 days. An advance will be paid through their bank accounts with the National Transport Commission issuing certified claims to banks.
Three wheller and school bus operators and fishermen too will be given similar compensation. Those who do not have electricity will be given kerosene stamps under the Samurdhi schemes.
All Island Private Bus Operators Federation’s Anjana Priyanjith said private buses plying short distance will receive 50 liters of diesel per day at the old price. Long distance buses will get 80 liters per day at the old price.
The formula was discussed at a meeting held between Treasury, Transport Ministry and private bus operators.
The subsidy for school vans will be granted through the Child Protection Authority and Divisional Secretaries.
President of the All Island Three Wheeler Operators Association Lalith Dharmasekera said 3.5 liters of diesel per day will be given to three wheelers according.
Treasury officials said that discussions are held at present to hand out a kerosene coupon for low income families through Grama Seva officers.
