Supreme Court issues notice to Ranil over Tissa petition

The Supreme Court yesterday issued a notice to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in connection to a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by former United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Tissa Attanayake. Attanayake on 6 March filed the FR petition challenging the cancellation of his party membership from the UNP. The notice was issued when the case was taken up for hearing before Justices Buwaneka Aluwihare, Eva Wanasundera and Upali Abeyratne. Attanayake was expelled from the party following a decision taken by the party’s working committee after Attanayake pledged his support to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa during the run up to the 2015 presidential election and after Attanayake assumed duties as the Health Minister of the previous regime.
