Sri Lanka to switch off for Earth Hour today

All Sri Lankans are requested to join the hundreds of millions of people around the world across borders of race, religion, culture, geography and society in one hour of contemplation for the planet and celebration of their year-round commitment to protect it.

Today you will see homes, schools, businesses and iconic landmarks across the planet turn off their lights for the appointed one hour – Earth Hour – at 8:30 p.m., 23 March.

Now in its seventh year, the annual lights out event has grown from a single-city initiative in 2007 to become the world’s largest display of environmental action, with citizens of 152 countries and territories across every continent coming together for Earth Hour 2013 indicating a growing global movement of positive change in environmental attitudes.

Earth Hour itself is not an act of contributing to climate change but a symbolic gesture that unites all people to convey to the world that they are willing to make a personal sacrifice to reduce their contribution to global warming and the climate change that is a result of it.
