MR keeps all guessing

A widely expected proclamation announcing a snap presidential polls at midnight yesterday failed to materialise, but the announcement by President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s office is expected over the next 24-48 hours, Government sources said. A Sri Lanka Freedom Party Central Committee meeting was called last night to discuss the Government’s election agenda. It ended at 10:30 PM yesterday, after heated arguments and discussions about crossovers and election dates, sources said. Postponement of the presidential election till March next year had also been discussed, the sources added. However the final decision made at the meeting was that elections plans would go ahead as scheduled, one source said. The Government was closely monitoring the situation, specifically watching for high profile crossovers that are expected today. However, the crossovers are unlikely to materialise until an election proclamation is made, some analysts said. President Rajapaksa also brought forward the weekly cabinet meeting to Wednesday, prompting speculation that the proclamation was imminent.
